The universe is expanding! Space itself is stretching out, carrying the galaxies with it.
How do we know? We can measure how quickly galaxies are moving relative to us! The spreadsheet already shared with you contains 30 galaxies, their distances, and how fast they are moving with respect to our galaxy.
Open the spreadsheet. Make a new sheet within it with your name on it by clicking the ‘+’ button on the bottom left of the sheet. Rename this sheet with your name.
Use the spreadsheet and the data to answer the following questions:
1. Which galaxy is moving away from us most quickly?
2. Which galaxy is moving away from us most slowly?
3. Find a cool picture of one of these galaxies at https://astropix.ipac.caltech.edu/
Post it in Slack!
4. Is there any relationship between distance and velocity?
To find out, make a scatter plot with distance on the x-axis and velocity on the y-axis,
fit a trendline to it.
